Photographs for School Magazine:
Some of the photos I took but decided not to use for School Magazine
I rather liked this one with Connor framed in the middle, but looking back it doesn't look like a school activity closer to a possible mugging.
Unfortunately the only ones I have of these were candid and so Jack's expressions were not very fitting, however the idea of a 6th former in his lunch break instead of at work or in an extra curricular activity was one which I didn't forget and I wanted to try to use.
And here is a very nearly over the shoulder shot of a "Go" game between two 6th formers in their lunch break. But I felt this image would be difficult to try to put text over aswell as cut the third person in the background out.

School Magazine Front Cover
The final project was the School Magazine Front Cover, I feel that the background image and title are suitable and that the tagline "could you be doing more" fits in well. The border on the right hand side was a good idea, yet perhaps ended up too wide. The border on the right hand side allowed for a related image to be pasted in. The left side is left bare as filling the space was difficult and with such a light background I'd have to use dark colours and risk spoiling the background image.
A Survey I took on people's preferences for Music Magazines. I asked 35 people. And 32 of them bought magazines. 3 Claimed they had never bought a music magazine.
I gathered the results by asking both people I knew over facebook, msn, twitter and other social networking sites and some others that were more random.
Photos for Contents and Double Page Spread:
The photos I took for these two were also taken for a unit of AS photography, I took between 90 and 120 overall and scrapped around 20 to 30. Of the 76 images I have left I have chose 5 of the possibilities for the double page spread or contents page.
Looking straight at the camera I thought this broad outline could be put to good use. But too much of the image was the white trees in the background. Nice image. Not nice to try to put text over: I didn't want to fill the scene with more black.
I thought this one of the old war shelter in the sunlight would be a great oxymoron with "Apocalypse" which could make the image more devastating. But again putting text onto it would be impractical.
This final one is almost the identical image with the colour taken out. With the oxymoron gone putting "Apocalypse" on this would be quite sinister. But when I considered it, the lack of central focus, unlike the image I chose made it impractical.

This first one is essentially the one I used in the actual Double Page Spread with an auto white balance filter and slightly heightening the contrast. I was tempted to use this, but the black and white version added connotations of depression and desolation and as the title was "apocalypse" it was deemed more fitting.
This next one I wanted to use because I thought the blue added more depression less desolation and the broad dark outlining of the human figure made it slightly threataning. I considered using this for my contents page but decided against it as the blue may interferre with the colour scheme.

Double Page Spread
The divide in the two pages should not matter as in a real magazine there is divide in the centrefold anyway.
Im satisfied with my double page spread because the pages run into each other and make use of an image which makes inserting text easy.
The image is appropriate, the text for the title is appropriate. The only thing that annoys me about the double page spread is that where "Choas talks" is written in dark red I wanted to use the Choas logo that I had made earlier (and put on my guitar in the front cover).
I also tried putting either the quote or the name "Tommy" at the bottom in yellow or gold but again when I tried this it did not look right.
Another idea would have been to start the first paragraph of the interview with a big letter to catch the reader's eye. Otherwise perhaps it's the background image and title taking too much of the attention.
Other than these minor setbacks I felt that my Double Page Spread was relatively successful and probably my personal favourite among these projects.
The two pages of the DPS laid next to each other, but not quite in line.
Contents Page
I felt that perhaps I could have made this a double page spread and continued a pelethera of pictures onto the other page. As it is, I feel the background it suitable yet bland but would still be good practice for the Double Page Spread to come next which I may continue the black and white colour scheme with. I liked the use of font, and the placement of the images on the limited space available but at the same time I feel that this is my least succesful project overall.
I took around 50 pictures for my front cover and scrapped almost 30.
Some of the ones which I didn't scrap and thought about using were:
This image I liked, however it's too dark and if you can see it there's an acoustic guitar in my hand. Not the right one for a metal magazine unfortunately.

I liked the fire in the darkness in this one, and the slight blur which makes it look like I have horns.
But I was too obscured for the image to be much use.

Front Cover Of Music Magazine
I believe I succeeded in making use of the limited space I had, and any space left works into the front cover. However I did not incorporate the images of Rage Against the Machine or the text on the Right Hand Side properly and they look poor as a result.
The Background image is suitable, and I like the look of the posterise effect, allowing for Bullet for my valentine.
A subtle touch I put on this was the "CHAOS" logo worked onto the guitar using GIMP so as to imply that the picture of me was actually a picture of someone from this fictional band.
I am satisfied with the effects of colourise and blur that I used on the Title.

My Proposal
My Proposal
I intend to produce a music magazine in the style of the magzine "Metal Hammer" this magazine explores the music genre of metal appealing to both those that enjoy the more mainstream metal bands and those that enjoy the metal bands more suited for a niche market.
I also looked at the magazines "Kerrang" and "Classic Rock" but did not go into as much detail exploration of them as I already had Metal Hammer in mind.
